Literacy

The “Big Read” Project

the big readWe supplied and presented a free book to every child in our Nursery and Primary schools and every student in our Secondary School.  At the request of the Head of English, the book provided to GCSE students was a copy of their set book which they could annotate as they wished.

In total we provided nearly 1, 400 books through our project.
For many children this was the first time they had owned a book.

Reading is Fundamental

Our work in literacy was recognised by the National Literacy Trust and we were in invited to lead a Partnership to provide a book each term to selected classes in seven Woking schools for a period of two years.

This is the Reading is Fundamental programme and to date we have, through sponsorship by British Land, provided in excess of 2,000 books.

Reading Champion 2005

Steve Thomas our Chief Executive was named as a Reading Champion for the National Reading Campaign by the National Literacy Trust.

Butterfly Phonics

Our researches into successful and proven interventions to improve poor literacy led us to Real Action; a community led educational charity set up in 1996 to provide effective solutions to some of the most challenging educational problems in a neighbourhood designated as exceptionally disadvantaged.

Two of the leading experts in teaching reading using synthetic phonics, Irina Tyk and Katie Ivens have given their personal support and advice to the Partnership in launching our Reading Project.

In January 2006 our pilot programme was launched with fourteen teenage students at The Bishop David Brown School. These students average reading age was 9 years or lower.

Since the start of our Project considerable interest from our community has been expressed and we already have a waiting list for the next course.
