Who We Are

  • We are a locally based Charity in Woking Surrey representing a large membership of individuals and organisations.
  • Our Charity focuses on a population of 9000+ residents in the ward of Maybury and Sheerwater and we address the causes of disadvantage and inequality
  • Maybury and Sheerwater is one of the most deprived area in Surrey and is in top thirty most deprived areas in the UK. (source Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004)
  • Our focus is primarily on young people as the under twenties represent one third of our total population.
  • We passionately believe that the lack of basic literacy skills is perpetuating the cycle of disadvantage and deprivation in our community.
Our Board of Trustees/Directors are as follows:

David Moore - Chairman

Margot West - Vice Chair

I have been involved with voluntary groups in Sheerwater for 25 years in the capacity of Chairman, President and currently Company Secretary of Woking Athletic Club, and have experienced many of the difficulties the area faces. I first joined the Board of the Partnership six years ago and now have the privilege of serving as Chairman. I am now retired and acting as a self employed Business Consultant specialise in Business Strategy and Management Mentoring and Coaching with an emphasis on high performing teams. I firmly believe in the link between poor literacy and social disadvantage and am determined to use my role to promote an improved level of literacy within our area.

I am a Sheerwater resident and have been involved with the Partnership for as long as it has existed. I am currently Vice-Chair, a member of the Communications Group and sit on the Community Grants Panel.

My main interest is in improving literacy, and I am, therefore, expecting to be very busy in the coming year as we launch our new project.

As a Director of the Partnership with responsibility for membership and as a Ward Councillor for Maybury and Sheerwater I try to build the links between people and local groups that will help those that are less fortunate amongst us.

We aim to keep members aware of local issues and work with them and relevant agencies to find suitable solutions for our communities.

I am the Principal responsible for education, at the Shah Jahan Mosque and also it’s Public Relations Officer.

I am a resident of Maybury, a Governor at Woking College and sit on a number of statutory and voluntary organisations groups representing our community.

I bring my knowledge and skills to the work of Partnership and am passionate about promoting and supporting its activities to improve literacy  as well as the other benefits provided   to residents in Maybury and Sheerwater.

I bring slightly different cards to the partnership’s table as a musician – working closely with two of the schools (as well as being a governor in both schools). I’m also a minister in the United Reformed Church working as a community minister in the Sheerwater community, with the church based there.

Musical literacy is often seen as the poor relation in education, but its ability to build up friendships and community is quite key. The partnership has been a great supporter of my work, and I’m delighted to be able to return some of that support as a director.
